Welcome to SmartStride

Welcome to SmartStride!

Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to have a look around – we thought we’d start off by explaining what we’re all about.

SmartStride aims to provide the most up-to-date, evidence-based information on all things running, and is committed to providing quality running science and running-specific physiotherapy to runners of all levels – from beginners right through to elite athletes.

As runners ourselves, we’re always keen for knowledge on how to stay injury-free to keep on running, and ways to train well, stay strong and perform well – and we hope to pass on that knowledge and experience to you, whether you’re a beginner, fun runner, or elite marathon runner!

We are passionate about the use of good research evidence to help form our advice and recommendations, and translating that research and knowledge into something that’s really accessible for runners.

Why are we so passionate about bringing this research and science to runners?

1.  Mat’s a nerd.

2.  There’s a lot of myth and misconception out there about running (no doubt you’ve heard from non-running friends about how running will wear out your knees!), particularly on the interwebs, but for our patients, and as runners ourselves, we want to have a good, clear rationale for doing something, rather than getting caught up in fads or fashion.

Particularly for injury prevention and injury management, there’s a lot of good science out there that tells us what works, and also what doesn’t work.  We want to make sure we’re steering runners towards what does work!

3.  We want runners to have a good understanding of the science so they can make well-informed decisions about their training and their running.

A runner that has a good understanding of their body, and how training effects the body, is more likely to avoid training errors that lead to injury.
You’ll see on all of the blog articles that we put up here some small numbers scattered throughout above the words (like this example here1) – this references some of the scientific articles that we’ve used to form our opinions and recommendations. At the end of each article, we’ll list the details of each article and provide links where possible – so you can check them out yourself if you’re interested – or short on holiday reading!

Through using the most up-to-date science and knowledge of running biomechanics and running injuries, our key goal is to assist runners of all levels to stay injury-free and achieve their goals – and enjoy their running!

We’ll be updating the site regularly, with a range of different topics on all things running – and if there’s anything you want to know more about and for us to put on the site, don’t hesitate to let us know.

So feel free to explore the site – and enjoy!
